Is oil pulling worth the attention?
We decided to try oil puling for a month. Oil puling is primarily used in Ayurvedic medicine, it's a fantastic oral detoxification that is simply done by swishing a tablespoon of the oil in your mouth. You can use everything from coconut oil, olive or sesame oil. Swish the product from 5 minutes to 20 minutes or even longer if you desire.
Oil pulling has benefits like whiter teeth, healthier gums, clearer skin, cleaner tongue, better digestive system. Sounds great. Lets do this!
How to oil pull and what to do after:
- Right when you wake up, without drinking anything wake a tablespoon of your oil of choise.
- Swish it around for 5-20 minutes (we did 10-15)
- Spit is out in the toilet, not the sink. This keeps your sink from getting all oily and gross.
- Make some salt water (salt and luke warm water) Swish that around for a good 30 sec.
- Now brush your theeth!
So the weeks passed....
I had done oil pulling a billion times before, but for some reason I just found it harder to to it this time. Saying to myself that I was going to do this for one whole month was a challenge in itself. Something about not wanting to fail, or skip a day. We both just told ourself that we are just going to do our best!
A result I noticed right away was how clean my mouth felt. My teeth also had a whiter hint, cleaner and healthier look to them. A mental thing I really noticed this week was how calm and clean I felt mentally after doing it. Most of the time I would just write a bit in the morning, meditate or hop in the shower. This way I was getting two thing done at the same time.
For me this challenge was so worth it! I really feel like it as made my whole mouth cleaner and healthier. My mental experience was so much more than I expected. I feel calmer every time I did it. The day starts of on a more productive level with me over and over again gets one task out of the way.
I want to say that I use a natural toothpaste from kiss my face, and a bamboo toothbrush. That may have something to to with my result.

Before me and Nora started this "oily" journey, I had only done oil pulling a couple of times when I found time to do it (which was not especially often). Oil pulling had never been a part of my morning ritual, and to be honest I did not look very much forward to this project, but I thought it could be worth the try. The first week of oil pulling were not awful, but I had to wake up 15 minutes earlier than usual, and when I tasted the oil floating around in my mouth it did not feel like it was worth it. Oil does not taste much but it felt a bit odd having it in my mouth for ten whole minutes, but as the days went by I got used to it. As the second week passed it became a part of a regular morning, and since then I started to notice the benefits of oil pulling.
I have to agree with Nora - this challenge was definitely worth it! My mouth felt so much cleaner and even healthier! I did not notice much of a difference when it came to the whiteness of the teeth but it was hard to spot a difference, because the lighting in my house changed a bit every day. Now that I'm used to it, it is such a great way to start the day :)
